Decatur County Journal
October l, l9l4

JOHN STEEN, who resides east of DeKalb one
mile, was struck by the
evening east bound train about one-fourth of
a mile east of DeKalb
Monday evening and killed.

The body was not found until the following
morning when the section men
discovered the terribly mutilated remains
upon the tracks. No one had
seen the accident and evidently the engine
and train crew of the east
bound train were not aware that they had
struck STEEN.
He was on his way from near DeKalb where he
had been attending a public
sale.

Just how he came to be struck by the train
will probably never be
known. Both legs were severed by the wheels
of the train and the body
terrible torn and mutilated. Dr. Layton, the
County Coroner, was
notified of the circumstances and accompanied
by Attorney John S.
Parrish, he drove to the scene of the
accident. He found an inquest
unnecessary.

The funeral was held from the STEEN home
Wednesday. MR. STEEN was
thirty years old and leaves a wife and baby
to mourn his tragic death.
