Decatur County Journal
July 9, l9l4

ARTHUR SMITH, the twelve-year-old son of MR.
and MRS. GEORGE SMITH,
passed away last Sunday morning at the home
of his parents six miles
southwest of Decatur, following a fall from a
horse he had been riding
on the previous Sunday.

ARTHUR had taken a team to a well to water
them and was returning to the
barn, riding one horse and leading the other.
It is supposed that the
horse he was riding in attempting to feed by
the roadside caused the lad
to lose his balance and fall from the
animal's back heavily to the
ground, striking upon his head. His brothers
were close by and upon
seeing him fall ran to his assistance. They
found that he had been
badly hurt. They carried him to the house
and physicians were hastily
summoned. Everything possible was done to
save the lad's life, but his
injuries were too great and he passed away on
Sunday morning, just seven
days after the accident occurred. He did not
regain consciousness. The
team was perfectly gentle. He leaves his
grief stricken parents, six
brothers and three sisters. The whole
community is shocked and grieved
by the sad death and the sympathy of all goes
out to the bereaved
family.

Funeral services were held Monday at the
home. Elder M.H. Brinker,
Pastor of the Decatur Christian Church being
in charge. The body was
placed tenderly at rest in the Elk Cemetery.
