MARTHA CHRISTIN HOFFMAN was born Nov. 30, 1897 on a farm adjoining the city of Leon, where her father, CALVIN WARNER HOFFMAN, was brought by his pioneer parent in 1854 when he was 6 months old. Her mother, ELLEN CYRENA PARRISH, was a school teacher. In 1878 CALVIN HOFFMAN established the HOFFMAN Law Office in Leon.

MARTHA died Feb. 20, 1983 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

MARTHA graduated from Leon High School, also from a two year business course at Simpson College. Returning to Leon, she became legal secretary to her father and later to her brother, FREDERIC, who entered the firm. Following three years at LaSalle University Extension classes in law, MARTHA passed the Iowa Bar Examination in 1939. She carried on the HOFFMAN Law Office after her brother’s death. She served for a time as Decatur County Attorney. She was joined in practice by her nephew, G. F. HOFFMAN II who, with his son JEFF, continues the HOFFMAN Law Office today.

After the death of her sister, HIMENA, in 1977, MARHTA retired from law practice, sold her home and made her home at Westview Acres. She found many friends there and made new ones.

Her family treasures the letters, poems and stories she wrote about them.

Survivors include a sister, DOROTHY IRWIN of St. Petersburg, Fa.; brother, JAMES LYLE HOFFMAN, Ottumwa, Iowa; niece, M. N. VINER, Knoxville, Iowa; nephews: G. F. HOFFMAN, Leon, and JAMES L. HOFFMAN, Alexandria, Va., other relatives and friends.
