Obituary ~ John Hinds
October 05, 1814 ~ January 09, 1894

Decatur County Journal
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
January, 1894

JOHN HINDS died at his house in Woodland last Tuesday evening aged 78 years. [80 years, 3 months & 4 days on his gravestone.]

After the evening meal a member of the family entered an adjoin room and discovered Mr. HINDS sitting in his chair dead. He had been suffering for some time with la grippe but at no time was his condition supposed to be serious and his death was probably due to heart disease.

Mr. HINDS was born in Beaver County, Pa., and on attaining his manhood located in Jennings county, Ind., where he resides for thirty years. In 1865 he located to Woodland township on a farm where he made his home until about a year ago when he engaged in merchandising the village of Woodland with his son, JOHN S. who preceded him to the other world about fourteen years ago.

The deceased leaves a brother, SAMPSON HINDS, of Morgan township, and the following children to mourn his sad and sudden demise; SAMMUEL H. HINDS, Ereka, Kan.; Judge S. O. HINDS, Muskogee, Indian territory; ORLANDO HINDS, Golden City, Mo; Mrs. ALLEN DUNN, Crown; SAMATHA SWAN, Clarinda; Mrs. OCTAVIA JONES, Skidmroe, Mo.; JOHN S. HINDS, Woodland, and Mrs. JANIE KINNEY, Sulpur Springs, Ark.

Thus death has again removed from our midst an old and most respected citizen. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, a useful citizen, good neighbor and a kind sad affectionate father. His death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. The funeral arraignments have been delayed on account of the absence of members of the family but the interment will probably occur tomorrow.

[John was married to Eliza A. MACE (1820-1880). He was interred at Hall Cemetery.]
