Kathleen Janiece Akers, age 72, the daughter of Marvin Morris and Nellie Maxine (Noftsger) Hancock, was born October 11, 1942. She died on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at Riverside South Nursing Home in Ames, Iowa.

Kathy graduated from Lamoni High School in 1961. She then graduated from Graceland College in 1965 with a degree in education. She started her teaching career at Colfax, Iowa in 1965. After one year there, she taught at Grand Valley Schools in Grand River, Iowa from 1967 until 1993. She finished her career in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, retiring in 2000. Over the years, she taught in both high school and junior high.

On June 24, 1978, she married Harold Dene Akers at the R.L.D.S. Church in Lamoni, Iowa. They were blessed with one son, Michael.

In her free time, Kathy enjoyed doing arts and crafts, crocheting, and her church, the Mt. Ayr Restoration Branch in Mt Ayr, Iowa. She more recently attended the Northeast Restoration Branch in Ankeny, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Harold on December 26, 2006; and ten year old grandson, Isaac Akers, in August of 2013.

Survivors include her son, Michael Akers and wife Rachel of Cambridge, Iowa; grandsons, Zach Larkins and Corey Akers, both of Cambridge; sisters-in-law, Debbie Cooper and husband Gene of Leon, Pam DeLong and husband James of Davis City, Iowa, and Penny Akers of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at the Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2015. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
