Obituary ~ Lillian Lavina (Hooker) Young
December 23, 1861 ~ January 13, 1941Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
January, 1941Lillian Hooker Young, daughter of William and Mary Hooker, was born at McConnelsville, Ohio, on December 23, 1861 and departed this life at her home in Garden Grove, Ia. on January 13, 1941 at the age of 79 years and twenty days. In the year 1881 she met Richard D. Young and on December 4, 1882 they were married and made their home in the vicinity of LeRoy. To this union eight children were born, one, William, died in infancy, the others were with their mother upon many occasions in her later life helping her celebrate all birthdays and holidays and in December 1940 all were present for the fifty-eighth anniversary of their marriage.
Mr and Mrs Young were both followers of the Presbyterian faith, first joining with the church in LeRoy and transferring their membership to the Garden Grove church in 1901 when they moved here from the farm. Their home has ever been a happy one and she especially enjoyed visiting with the friends who dropped in to see her since her illness has confined her to her home, first as a semi-invalid for a number of years; then since her first stroke which afflicted her in September of this year.
She was a lover of beautiful flowers and since her confinement to the house found the keenest pleasure in caring for her plants and keeping them full of bloom and beauty in recognition of this the flowers sent to the bereaved family seemed to soften the shock of the sudden passing which was telephoned to her children late on Monday afternoon.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 16, at ten o'clock in the Presbyterian church conducted by her pastor, Rev B. F. Fiesedmas, who paid simple tribute, to the passing of the churches faithful members and workers. In these words may the reflection of life that has been taken abide with us and some portion of her trust and faith be a part of Christian living.
Besides her husband she leaves the following children with their families to mourn the loss of one held dear, all but one of whom were present at the rites; Mrs Verda A. Sullivan of Burlington, Lymon and Glen Young of Osage, Mrs. Edith Aten and Mrs. Nel Stanley of Humeston, Mrs. Irma Rodgers of Papillion, Ne. and Mrs. Bernice Schmitt of Donnelson, Ia.
[Interment was made at Garden Grove Cemetery.]
