June 13, 1831 ~ September 21, 1895Decatur County Journal
Leon, Decatur County, IowaDEATH OF JOSEPH PECK.
September 5th, 1895, Mr. and Mrs. JOSEPH PECK joined an excursion party at Humeston for the purpose of visiting relatives and friends at the old home in Ashland county, Ohio. After their arrival, on the 16th, Mr. PECK was seized with a sudden and dangerous sickness and on the 21st, he passed away in spite of the efforts of the most skilled physicians. His son ORLOW was telegraphed for but his father was dead when he reached there Monday morning, the 23rd. The body was conveyed to the home of the deceased in Morgan township and the interment occurred on Thursday last.
The subject of this sketch was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, June 13, 1831. When he was six years of age he moved with his parents to Ohio and settled in Ashland county. His father, JACOB PECK died in Ohio forty-three years ago and his mother, LYDIA (BINEHOWER) PECK, died at the old homestead in Ashland county, in 1877. JOSEPH, who was he only son of five children, was married in 1852 to RACHEL BOSLER, born in Huntington county, Pennsylvania, in 1828. She was seven years old when her father died. To Mr. and Mrs. PECK were born the following children: HIRAM, ORLOW, ADEN, ALIN and Mrs. DORA ABERNATHY, ALIN, the second child married SAMUEL HICKMAN and died in 1877, aged twenty-three years. ORLOW resides near Allerton, in Wayne county; HIRAM and Mrs. DORA ABERNATHY reside near the homestead in Morgan township and ADEN lives in Alma, Colorado. The deceased was a member of the Universalist church. By industry and frugality he had acquired a valuable estate in Morgan and Woodland townships. The bereaved members of the family have the sympathy of a large number of acquaintances in our county.
It was the privilege of the writer to have known the deceased for many years. He was an unpretentious man and yet warm hearted, sincere and genuine. One of his well marked characteristics was his kind and genial disposition. He delighted in making all around him happy, and never seemed to enjoy himself more then when he was entertaining his friends.
He loved his country and was patriotic in all his impulses. He enjoyed, as he deserved to enjoy, the full confidence and esteem of his neighbors and acquaintances. He was conscientious in the performance of all the duties of life, true to himself. As a business man he was straightforward in his enterprises. In his family he was affectionate, kind and true, the light of their life, the guide of their actions. The JOURNAL pays its last tribute of respect to his memory. Ours is the loss. Peace to his ashes.
