DEATH NOTICE:

PALMER, ROBERT L. "Bob", 88, of Garden Grove, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. Funeral Services were Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Slade O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa, with Lay Speaker Ed Coffey officiating. Burial was in Garden Grove Cemetery, Garden Grove, Iowa.

Robert Lucas "Bob" Palmer, age 88 of Garden Grove, Iowa, son of Carrel Vern and Sarah Olive [Collins] Palmer, was born June 25, 1922 at Van Wert, Iowa and died July 21, 2010 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa.

Bob grew up in Decatur County. He served his country in the U.S. Army and during World War II, from 1942 until 1946. Bob married Maxine Coffey on March 14, 1948. To this union three children were born: Ronald Eugene, Larry Lee, and Sheryl Ann.

Bob was a long-time farmer. He farmed in rural Garden Grove until retirement. In 1988, he and Maxine moved into Garden Grove. Following Maxine's death on November 5, 1997, Bob remained in their home until entering Westview Acres in Leon in October 2009.

In earlier years, Bob enjoyed watching baseball games. After losing his sight, he continued listening to baseball games on the radio, listening to country western music, and listening to western "books on tape."

Preceding Bob in death were his parents; wife Maxine Palmer; brothers Wayne and Harold Palmer; and nephew Jim Palmer.

He is survived by his three children: Ron Palmer and wife Lyndy of Charleston, South Carolina, Larry Palmer and wife Cathy of Urbandale, Iowa, and Sheryl Young and husband John of Maricopa, Arizona; 6 grandchildren: Robert Palmer and wife Sandy, Michelle Young, Amy Miller and husband Mike, Cory Palmer, Matt Palmer, and Heather Anderson and fiance Jay Schauer; 5 great grandchildren: Willow, Colby, Sam, Addison, and Katelyn; brothers Carrel Palmer of Garden Grove and Raymond Palmer and wife Evelyn of Leon; sister Chris Smith of Madrid, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
