Thursday, March 29, 1923Berton B. McFarland was born in Richmond, Washington County, Iowa, February 2, 1869, and passed away on March 9, 1923, at Long Beach, California. His age was fifty-four years, one month and seven days. He moved with his parents from Washington County at the age [illegible] located on a farm northwest of [illegible] where he grew to manhood. He attended the Garden Grove Normal School under Professor Beard.
When a young man, he entered business in Kansas City, Missouri, where he lived for fifteen years and since that time his work has taken him to various places. For the past three years he has been in the west, spending most of the time at his work in Los Angeles, California. Mr. McFarland had enjoyed splendid health and his passing was a sudden shock to his many friends and relatives. As far as it can be known, heart failure was the cause of his death.
In disposition and traits of character, Mr. McFarland was generally optimistic and pleasant, having naturally a cheerful and happy manner about him that bespoke his generosity and helpfulness that he was to others.
He leaves to mourn his loss, four sisters and three brothers. Their names are as follows: Mrs. Emma McCoy, of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Ada Given, of Macksburg, Iowa; Mrs. Villa Bartlett, of Garden Grove, Iowa; and Miss Nellie McFarland, of Long Beach, California; the brothers, A.T., of Des Moines; A.G., of Tulare, California, and S.J., of Long Beach, California.
The body was shipped from Long Beach to Garden Grove for burial, accompanied by Miss Nellie and her brother, S.J. McFarland. The funeral services were conducted from the Clarence Bartlett home in Garden Grove by Rev. V.J. Andrew, Saturday afternoon, March 17. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful Garden Grove Cemetery.
