May 9, 1930 ~ February 14, 2015Mary Lou Waugh, age 84, of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest Robert "Bob" and Emily Elizabeth "Lela" (Hartley) Jones, was born May 9, 1930 at Davis City, Iowa on her parents' farm. She died at her Lamoni home on Saturday, February 14, 2015.
Mary Lou graduated from Leon High School in 1948. After high school she worked at the Leon bank as a teller. She also worked at Piper's Candies in Chariton, Iowa, riding the trolley both ways.
In the summer of 1951, Mary Lou met the love of her life at a square dance at Hanaco north of Leon. His name was Doyle Waugh. He left for the Marines in the fall of 1951. They were reunited in the fall of 1953, at the Jones Drug Store in Lamoni, where Mary worked. On November 24, 1954, Mary Lou married Doyle Waugh in Indianola, Iowa. They lived in Lamoni all their married life. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends in November of 2014. She was mother to four children, Danny Edwin, Brenda Lou, and two deceased infants, Lucinda Rae and Jo Ann. She was dedicated to raising her children and helping with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary Lou's children and her grandchildren were always her number one priority. She took great pride in caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also a dedicated daughter who cared for both her parents before their deaths. Her family was her life's work and her dedication to them was unwavering and unconditional.
She loved gardening, working in her yard, cleaning, and talking for hours to anyone who would listen.
Preceding her in death were her parents; in-laws, Archie and Treva Waugh; two infant daughters; and brother, Bob Jones; and sister Lyda Drummond.
Survivors include her husband, Doyle Waugh, of Lamoni; son, Danny Waugh and wife Kris of Jewell, Iowa; daughter, Brenda McLaughlin and husband Jim of Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Clint & Teela Waugh of Decatur, Iowa, Clay Waugh of Leon, Miranda of Ellston, Iowa, Emily Waugh of Jewell, and Colin and William McLaughlin, both of Olathe; great grandchildren, Mili, Beau, and Boon Waugh; brother, Bill Jones and wife Sharon of Lamoni; sister, Carol Shields of Lamoni; daughter-in-life, Denyse Scott and husband Kyle of Ellston; sisters-in-law, Sandra Sibole and husband Gene and Marilyn Evans, all of Des Moines, Iowa, Marlene Waugh of Ankeny, Iowa, Emily Waugh of Lamoni; Lorene Waugh of Norwalk, Iowa, and Janice Waugh of Detroit, Michigan; many nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
Memorial Services will be conducted at Lamoni Community of Christ, 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2015, with Elders Bill McElroy and Dennis McElroy officiating.
Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni was in charge of arrangements.
