Obituary.

MINNIE CHASEY died at Terre Haute, July 4th, (1882) at half past one o’clock, of what is termed quick consumption. The deceased was the beloved wife of THOMAS CHASEY. She left two children, CHARLEY and IDA, aged respectively ten and eight years.

Minnie was born in Van Buren county, this state, and was converted and joined the church at the age of ten years. When she died she was twenty-seven years, five months and twenty-seven days old.

There is something in the Christian Life and death that cannot be told in words, MINNIE was not one who made a loud profession, nor had she a great deal to say on the subject of religion, but her life exerted an influence for good that will not soon be forgotten. In her life she always had a comforting word for her husband in the dark hours. She was a most loving an affectionate mother. Her children address her as “MINNIE” with as much childish simplicity as though she had been a child with them. She left a father and mother, one brother, and three sisters. It is not necessary to state that the bereaved husband, the motherless children, the stricken father and mother, and weeping, sisters and brother have the sympathy of the entire community. That was better expressed in the tears that were shed at her funeral, there being scarcely an acquaintance who didn’t shed tears when beholding her corpse.

We watched by her bedside during most of her sickness, during all of which she was patient and hopeful. She was told about three and one half hours before she died that she must go, she couldn’t live, that the three attendant physicians, LAYTON, PARRISH and DANIELS, had said that she could not live but a short time. She did not appear excited, but still entertained hope. About half an hour before she died and after the other physicians had gone, she turned to Dr. DANIELS and said, “Doctor, am I dying?” He told her that she was slowly passing passing away. At this she calmly called for a looking glass, and carefully scrutinized every part of her countenance and her tongue. Then she handed the glass back and said “that will do.” Then her sister SADIE asked her if she was ready and willing to die. She replied “Yes, pretty near.” Then she turned to Tom and asked him if he would meet her in heaven. With much candor and firmness he said he would. After this she turned to her children and expressed with much regret at having to leave them. She then called her parents, her sisters, and brother and gave each a parting kiss and a dying word. She then appeared to be quite ready. Clapping her hand she began to sing and sang the fooling lines.

“Former friends, how oft I’ve sought them,
To console my troubled mind;
Now they’re gone, like leaves of autumn
Scattered by the dreary wind.”

MINNIE will be much missed in this community. None knew her but to live her. Her home was a quiet, peaceful and happy one. No discord marred the peace of her home, or chilled the love of husband and wife. May all the bereaved friends attain, like her, a happy Christian death, and in the future all will be well.

“Enclasped in the arms of a Savior she loves,
No fear can the Christian annoy,
With sweet resignation she gently removed
To reap the fruition of joy.”
