Obituary ~ Gladys Jeanne (Luce) Cherington
January 20, 1929 ~ December 09, 2000

Gladys Jeanne Luce Cherington, daughter of Leon and Carrie Overholtzer Luce, was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Decatur County and died Dec. 9, 2000, in Gilbert, Ariz.

She graduated from Leon High School in 1946, where she received her teacher certificate. She later attended Drake University in Des Moines for additional classes.

She married F. Allison Cherington on Nov. 30, 1946, at the Christian Parsonage in Osceola.

They lived on the family farm in Osceola where he farmed and eventually she started working as a nurse's aide at the local hospital. Because of health problems the family moved to Chandler, Ariz. in January of 1960. They moved to Mesa, Ariz. in June 1960.

Mrs. Cherington received her registered nurse degree and associate of arts degree from Mesa Community College in 1973. She retired in 1988 after working 25 years at Mesa Lutheran Hospital.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Al Cherington.

Mrs. Cherington is survived by a daughter, Linda J. Cherington of Mesa; three sons, Randy Cherington of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ronny Cherington and his wife, Karen Cherington, of Mesa and Ricky Cherington and his wife, Judy Cherington, of Gilbert; three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; a brother, John Luce and his wife, Mildred Luce, of Decatur; a sister, Marie Kendall and her husband, Jack Kendall, of Cedar Rapids; an aunt, Ruth Overholtzer Myers of Leon; a brother-in-law, Danny Cherington and a sister-in-law, Jean Ramsey, both of Osceola; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Dec. 16, 2000, at Melcher's Chapel of the Roses in Mesa, the Rev. Jack Kendall officiating. Private burial was March 8, 2001, at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale.
