Obituary ~ Tommie Lee "Tom" Benedict
August 23, 1938 ~ October 20, 2014

Tommie Lee Benedict, age 76 of Davis City, Iowa, the son of Fenton Eber and Clara Elvina (Lee) Benedict, was born August 23, 1938, in Page County, Iowa. He died at the Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center in Lamoni, Iowa on Monday, October 20, 2014.

Tom grew up on a farm south of Davis City and attended New Buda country school. He graduated from Leon High School in Leon, Iowa in 1957. Tom married Nancy Hoover and they were blessed with two daughters, Debra Lynne and Laura Leigh. He later gained step-son, Tony. On May 10, 1975, Tom married Carol Hogrefe in Storm Lake, Iowa and they were happily married for nearly 40 years.

Early on, Tom and Carol lived in a country farm house outside Carlisle, Iowa, later moving to Des Moines, Iowa. In 2000, they purchased a quaint old house west of Davis City, Iowa where they spent many hours re-modeling and retired there in 2001.

While living in Des Moines, Tom was employed as Building Engineer for the Fleming Building, then later worked for Holmes-Murphy insurance and NCMIC.

Tom loved life and truly enjoyed sharing his hobbies with his wife, family and friends. They included motorcycle trips, hunting, fishing, cooking and gardening skills, for which he excelled. Tom had a big heart. He was trusting and generous to those he had known for years as well as those he met in passing. He had a spirited sense of humor but could also offer a patient listening ear to friends in need. Tom had a way of making everyone feel welcome in any situation.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Carol’s parents Emil and Alma Hogrefe, siblings, George “Benny”, Anna Miller, stillborn infant Bobby, Francis “Jinx”, and infant Kenneth; grandchildren Joshua T. and John William Fuller.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Benedict of Davis City, Iowa; children, Debra Benedict of Dale, Texas, Laura Benedict Scott and husband Bruce Phillips of Georgetown, Texas, and Tony Fuller and wife Judy of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Sidney Scott, Abi, Makayla, and Forrest Fuller, and Robby Prohaska; three great grandchildren; siblings, Connie Benedict and companion Harold Hancock of Creston, Iowa and Keith “Pete” Benedict and wife Rose of Oak Lawn, Illinois; brother-in-law, Arno Miller of Hastings, Iowa, sister-in-law, Lois Benedict of Lakewood, Colorado; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Dennis and Janeen Hogrefe of Albert City, Iowa, Gary and Julie Hogrefe of Albert City, Iowa, and Randy and Sandy Hogrefe of Storm Lake, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services wre conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2014 at Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home, Leon, Iowa, with the Reverend Clint Hogrefe officiating. Interment was made at Bethel Cemetery, Davis City, Iowa.
