Obituary ~ Wilma Bernice (Houser) Briner
May 02, 1914 ~ April 12, 2001

Wilma Bernice Briner of Grand River, daughter of Clarence and Rosa Davidson Houser, was born May 2, 1914, in Humeston and died April 12, 2001, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr. She was 86.

Her parents lived in several locations, in search of work, while Wilma was growing up. When she was 12 years old she lost her mother while living in Minnesota.

She married Lloyd R. Briner on May 11, 1932. They were married for 59 years. The couple became the parents of three children, Lavone, Eugene and Jack.

Mrs. Briner was a homemaker and also a cook at the Grand River School for 21 years from 1955 until 1976. She made a home for her son, Jack, for several years after her husband's death.

She loved to crochet and she crocheted pieces for all the family and many friends.

Mrs. Briner liked retirement, especially when family and friends dropped in for a visit. She looked forward to Thursdays when she went to Osceola to the hairdresser and shopping with the girls.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lloyd, in 1991; a daughter, Lavone Binning in 1994; a sister, Glenys Jenkins; stepmother, Minnie Houser; two step-sisters, Ruth and Pauline; a step-brother, Dale Edgington and a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Briner.

Mrs. Briner is survived by two sons, Eugene Briner and his wife, Linda Briner, of Seattle, Wash. and Jack Briner of Grand River; a son-in-law, Gene Binning and his wife, Norma Binning, of Grand River; five grandchildren, Janice Miller and her husband, Bill Miller, of Van Meter, Ronnie Binning and his wife, Linda Binning, Richard Binning and his wife, Fay Binning, all of Grand River, Joyce Hoppes and her husband, Rex Hoppes, of Indianola and Darren Briner, and his wife, Mary Briner, of Seattle; 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; a step-sister, Wilma Bales of Ottumwa; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were April 14 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, the Rev. Terry Roberts officiating. Organist Charletta Durell played "Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were grandsons, Jon Binning, Darren Briner, Richard Binning, Aaron Hill, Ronnie Binning, Rex Hoppes, Dan Bockman and Bill Miller. Interment was in Grand River Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.
