Mrs. Sarah Jane Walton

Sarah Jane Walton, second daughter of Lenhart
and Elizabeth Walton, was born
in Crawford County, Ohio, January 20, 1840
and died at her home east of Leon
on December 10, 1920, aged 80 years 10 months
and 20 days.

At the age of eight year she moved with her
parents to Jasper County,
Indiana, then in the year 1853 the family
came to Decatur County, Iowa and
settled on a farm south of Leon now known as
the Keeler farm where she grew
to womanhood. She was married to L. R.
(Note: Lucius Rane) Chastain
January 26, 1860 and they went to
housekeeping on Eden Prairie.

In the year 1889 they moved to the present
home where she has since resided.
To this union were born ten children, four of
them having preceded her in
death...Harry, Ella, Emma and Cora). The
survivors being William R., of
Leon; Mrs. Olive Van Nostrand of Cheyenne,
Wyoming; John M., Mrs. Nellie
Smith, Benjamin F. and Rolla Chastain of near
Leon, all of whom were present
at her death except Mrs. Van Nostrand. On
July 21, 1889, her husband died
after a brief illness, leaving the family
wholly to her care and well and
truly did she rear the family. Her life was
one great struggle for many
years in her effort to keep the family
together, and the trials and
privations she endured can be realized and
appreciated only by those who
have undergone the privations of pioneer
life.

In addition to her immediate family she is
survived by eight Grandchildren,
one Great Grandchild and many friends who
mourn her departure.

She was one of the charter members of the
Church of Christ at Eden Prairie
when the church at that place was organized
through the efforts of J. C.
Porter. She wanted always to do the right
and among her last thoughts were
the interests and progress of the work of the
church.

Funeral services were conducted at the home
Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'
clock, conducted by William J. Campbell of
Davis City. Interment being in
the Walton cemetery by the side of her
husband. A large concourse of
sorrowing friends followed her remains to
their last resting place, her
casket being covered by beautiful floral
offerings

One question - I show ten children one son
name Henry and none named "Harry"
as it states above. Anyone know which name
is correct?

Thanks, Jan Lund
