DEATH TAKES CLYDE KING - 7-12-1969

CLYDE NELSON KING, 83, former Springfieldian who at one time was a U.S.
Government Official in Europe and for many years was an officer at the
International Harvester Company, died early this morning in Municipal
Hospital in Port Saint Joe, Fla.

Mr. King, who in recent years had made his home in Eastpoint, Fla., was the
father of Weldon King, 1234 East Grand, widely known professional
photographer.

The elder King suffered a stroke about three weeks ago and had been
hospitalized since. His son spent a week with him, returning to Springfield
serval days ago. He left again this morning for Florida after receiving
word of his father's death.

Clyde King, who was engaged in the farm machinery business in Springfield
from 1908 to 1911 was with the International Harvester Company from 1912 to
1948, serving for most of those years as Director of Foreign Sales. He was
Vice President and Director of the International Harvester Export Company
from 1927 to 1948.

Upon his retirement from the company he was appointed Chief of the Economic
Cooperation Administration special mission to Austria (The Marshall Plan),
in 1948, remaining in that post for four years. He was Economic Advisor to
the U.S. High Commissioner and Military Commander in Vienna.

Mr. King, who was born in Springfield, March 29, 1886, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. David King, joined the Navy in 1905, serving in European and Asiatic
areas.

He was the first man to cross Africa in a four-wheel vehicle (an
International Harvester truck) driving over roadless stretches from Nairobi,
Kenya, to Lagos, Nigeria, in 1927.

In addition to his son, Mr. King is survived by his wife, Leona M. King of
Eastpoint, Fla. He was formerly married to Blanche Murphy King of
Springfield, who now is a patient in Mercy Villa.

Funeral services will be in Springfield with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery under direction of Klingner. Plans are incomplete.
