Wednesday, November 04, 1992Anna Laura Akes, daughter of George McClellan and Cora Bell (Negley) Buckingham, was born Jan. 17, 1899 in Decatur Co. Iowa, and died Oct. 26, 1992, at Westview Acres Care Center in Leon, Iowa, age 93 years, 9 months and 9 days.
Laura attended school in Decatur County. On Nov 30, 1918 she was married to Warren Akes at Garden Grove, Iowa. They were the parents of three sons; Dean, Harold and Wayne. Warren and Laura lived in Decatur, LeRoy and Leon, Iowa.
For many years Laura ran a small restaurant in LeRoy. In 1949 they moved to Leon. She lived in her home until April 1990 when she went to Westview Acres Care Center at the age of 90.
She was a member of the Leon Christian Church; a past member of the Leon Social Club and a member of the Leon Garden Club. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting and doing for others.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Warren, in 1961; three sisters; May Cox, Grace Scott and Goldie Young; and five brothers; Bill, Oliver, Fred, Virgil and Walter Buckingham.
Surviving are sons; Dean and wife Lila, Leon, Iowa; Harold and wife Virginia, Osceola, Iowa and Wayne and wife Marion, Osceola; granddaughter Cheryl Dunlap and husband Glen, Island Lake IL; grandson Verle Akes and wife Arlene, Sioux Falls, SD; two great grandchildren; Jennifer and David Akes; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
