Obituary ~ Vera Marie (Koenck) Pettiecord
August 18, 1926 ~ August 30, 2014

Vera Marie Pettiecord, age 88 of Leon, Iowa, the daughter of Gustav Herman and Olga Anna (Lage) Koenck, was born August 18, 1926 at Lake Benton, Minnesota. She died at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa on Saturday, August 30, 2014.

Vera attended country school through 8th grade, then she helped out at home. At age 18, she married Everett Guy Pettiecord on July 16, 1944, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Janet, Everett, Jr. and Linda. She was a wife, mother, and homemaker. Vera loved to clean house and be busy, and worked part time cleaning for others. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning and freezing her harvest. She also loved reading, hot air ballooning, birds and butterflies, and kept her hands busy crocheting doilies.

She was a member of the Women's Garden Club and the United Methodist Women. In earlier years she attended the Farmer's Chapel Church of Indianola. She and Everett wintered in Arizona from 1981 until 1991. After Everett's death, Vera moved in with Linda's family, and was a "granny nanny" for 15 years. In 1999 she re-dedicated her life to the Lord and was baptized. In 2007, she moved into Terrace Park Assisted Living Center in Leon, where she was close to her sister, Iris Martin, and attended Decatur United Methodist Church. Later, she moved into Westview Acres in Leon.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Everett in 1992; son-in-law, Rodney Barton; and four siblings, Elmer Koenck, Frances Langfitt, Hilda Gerber, and Stanley Koenck.

She is survived by her children: Janet Barton of Cambridge, Iowa, Everett (Denise) Pettiecord of Yardley, Pennsylvania and Linda (Mark) Anderson of Gilbert, Arizona; six grandchildren, Neil (Traci) Barton, Sarah, Abigail and Emma Anderson, Julia and Everett Pettiecord, III; two great grandchildren, Rhys and Kendall Barton; siblings, Iris and Ed Martin of Leon, Peter Koenck of Fenton, Iowa, Donna Koenck and Lorraine Swanson, both of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Elvin and Sharon Koenck of New York, and Marvin and Mary Koenck of Maryland; sisters-in-law, Arlene of Milford, Iowa and Carol Koenck of Emmetsburg; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

She was known to many as "Aunt Boots," and will be dearly missed by all who knew her and loved her quick wit, sweet smile and calm, content demeanor.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2014 at Slade-O'Donnel Funeral Home, Leon, with Pastor Jodi Rushing officiating. Interment was made at Leon Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established by the Family.
