Flora Louise, second child of Earl and Helen (Lillard) Smith, was born June 7, 1911 at LeRoy, Iowa and left this earth on March 16, 1992 at her home near Van Wert, Iowa. Louise spent her girlhood in and around Weldon, Iowa. She graduated from Weldon High School in 1929 and attended Iowa State Teachers' College where she received her teaching certificate. Her first rural school was Lone Star School where her transportation was a horse and her first salary $32.00 a month. On June 8, 1934 she married Clifton B. Redman and they moved to their newly-built farm south of Van Wert. During the great depression she worked hand-in-hand with Cliff to make the farm successful. Four children were born to this union: Phyllis Ann, Jane Louise, Darrell Dean and Nancy Marie. In 1945 she and Cliff moved to the home where they lived for the next 47 years. Louise was a member of the Work-n-Chat Club and a devoted homemaker. Louise loved reading, education and nature. She instilled in her children a love of learning and encouraged their accomplishments. She was a devoted homemaker and mother. She spent many happy days as a teacher's aide in the Leon public schools. Her greatest joys were attending the college graduations of her grandchildren Ben and Christine and the weddings of her grandchildren Ben, Eric, Scott and Laura. Her great gift in her later life was the birth of her last granddaughter Angela Louise. Her visits to California and Denver were momentous occasions. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers Dale and Lewis Smith; and infant sister Harriet Jean. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 57 years, Clifton, whom she called Pete; her children and their spouses: Phyllis and Don Bierbaum of Covina, California; Jane and Robert Ackerman of Rowland Heights, California; Darrell Redman of Des Moines, Iowa; Nancy and Gary Hill of Denver, Colorado; her special daughter-in-law Sharon Long and husband Larry of Indianola, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sisters: Ruth Mendenhall and husband Adrian of Redondo Beach, California; and Edna King of Venice, California; sisters-in-law: Marie Baker, Doris Sink, Nadene Redman and Wanda Redman; brother-in-law Horace Redman; a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends.
