MRS. MARTHA HOLDEN died at the residence of
her son, JOHN HOLDEN in
Leon, Friday, Aug. 9, l895. Deceased was
born in the town of Eccles,
England, March 20, l807; at the time of her
death was 88 years, 4 months
and 20 days of age. Her maiden name was
MARTHA ROBERTS; with her
husband and children she emigrated to the
United States in the year
l848. She first of all settled in New
England and in the year l859,
came to Decatur County, Iowa. She was the
mother of l3 children, only
one of which survive her--JOHN HOLDEN, with
whom she resided. She
leaves behind her 8 grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren.

She joined the Baptist Church of New Salem at
the Holden School House
under the preaching of Rev. Abraham Stanley
and J.B. Edmunson, of
Bloomfield, Iowa. Her life was consistent,
evincing many noble traits
of the Christian character. Her end was
peace. Short services were
held at the house of her son on Sabbath
morning, conducted by Rev.
Thomas Dyall, after which her remains were
taken to the Baptist Church
at New Salem. Quite a number of friends
accompanied the remains of our
beloved sister from Leon to the church where
further services were
held. "At Rest" was engraved upon the silver
of the beautiful casket,
indicative of the freed and liberated spirit
of the dear departed one.
She will never have a sigh again, or that
poor headache. All storms of
affliction, care, anxiety, feebleness and
death are past. "At rest
forever."

The deep drawn sigh which heaved
the troubled breast,

Is now exchanged for such unbroken
rest.

Who then regrets to quit earth's
darkened shore,

For that blest land where sorrow
is no more.
