'GONE BUT NOT
FORGOTTEN'

MARION ONEY was born 2 miles southeast of
Leon, Decatur Co., Iowa, Feb.
8th, l846, and died at his late residence
Sept. 22nd, l894, after a long
painful illness. He was the son of WM. ONEY,
who came from Illinois to
this county about l844, and the fifth of nine
children, six sons and
three daughters. MR. ONEY volunteered and
was on the second day of
April, l862, mustered into service for his
country under Capt. Hiram
Stanley, being then in his seventeenth year.
His company was ordered to
Chillicothe, Mo. While there in camp he and
many of his comrades took
the measles. While many of the company died,
he barely recovered in a
very feeble state of health. Soon after this
the mumps came into his
company and was again prostrated with this
disease from which when he
recovered, he was in very poor health most of
the time while in the
service. He served three years as a soldier
till his time expired.

Then he went west to seek a congenial climate
for the benefit of his
poor health. He was in the west 5 years.
During this time he served as
contractor and the superintending of getting
out railroad timber. The
deceased returned to this county again about
l870 and purchased the
interest of the other heirs to 80 acres of
the homestead where he died.
He was united in marriage to MISS IRENE
KELLEY, the daughter of JUDGE
W.F. KELLEY and wife, Dec. 25, l873. To them
five children were born.
Two sons passed away, three are still living,
two daughters and one son.

He was a worthy member of Leon, Post No. 25l.
Had by industry and
frugality accumulated a competency for his
family having secured a farm
of about 200 acres which when able he kept in
a nice condition for he
was still in poor health. He was much of the
time compelled to hire
laboring men on the farm paying them good
wages for their services.
MR. ONEY was a lover of a good home, keeping
his yard and vineyard in an
excellent condition so the passing admirer
often said "how nice, how
lovely." But his race in life is run, we
shall miss him but not forget
this long suffering one. He truly was a good
citizen, a true soldier, a
kind husband, a loving father and a filial
friend. His house was often
the resting place of kind friends and
messengers of the cross.

His funeral took place at the family
residence Sept. 23. The sermon
being delivered by the Rev. Geo. M. Hughs of
Leon. The remains were
followed by a large concourse of people and
laid to rest in the Leon
Cemetery to await the call of the
resurrection trumpet. May the grace
of God sustain his bereaved wife and children
and many kind friends.

--F.
EDWARDS.
