Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa march 7, 2012)

SUSAN KATHERINE HINDS ... Susan Hinds, of Leon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, of complications from Parkinson's Disease.

Susan Katherine Hinds was bon on March 17, 1949, to the late Harold E. and Geraldine [Williams] Chastain. She attended the East Eden Country School south of Leon and graduated in 1967 from Central Decatur High School, where she was a record-setting track athlete. Susan received her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1971. She married Keith Hinds on December 11, 1971, at Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon.

After working at the Decatur County Farm Bureau and Decatur County Treasurer's Office in Leon, Susan accepted a teaching position at Central Decatur in January 1979. She taught junior-high reading, social studies and talented and gifted classes, as well as coaching cheer leading, drama and other extra-curriculars, before retiring at the end of the 2004 school year. Susan had a rare and enviable trait: she truly loved teaching teenagers, and she inspired hundreds of her students with her lifelong passion for reading and knowledge.

Susan believed in serving her community and will be remembered for her generosity and wit. She attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leon and taught Sunday School there. She also volunteered as a Girl Scouts Troop Leader and served on the Leon Public Library Board.

Susan was a devoted wife and loved spending time with family and friends. She was a strong, caring and supportive role model for her daughter, and she enjoyed engaging in fierce Scrabble battles with her son-in-law.

Susan will be dearly missed by her beloved husband, Keith, and her daughter Megan [Hinds] Myers and son-in-law, Cory Myers, of Sioux Falls, S.D. She is survived by four siblings: Joe (Judy) Chastain of Afton; Sara Grimm of Tucson, Ariz.; Nancy (Lee) Brenizer of Davis City; and John (Marcia) Chastain of Lyons, Kan. Preceding Susan in death were her parents.

A memorial will be established by the family.
