DEATH NOTICE:

WEIR, Joy Fay, 72, of Grand River, Iowa, died Monday, June 9, 2008 at her home. Funeral mass was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand River on June 14 with Father Thomas Dooley and Deacon Reinhold Kunze officiaitng. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery near Grand River. Arrangements were through the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

JOY FAY WEIR ... Joy Fay Weir, age 72, the daughter of Paul Bryan and Inez Ethel [Grimm] Crees, was born September 20, 1935 in Decatur County, Iowa. She died at her rural Grand River, Iowa home on Monday, June 9, 2008.

Joy played high school girls basketball for Grand River High School the year they went to State. On May 29, 1954 she married Edward C. Weir in Des Moines, Iowa. They were blessed with six children. The family lived in Johnston, Iowa where over the years Joy sold carpet for Sears then was a bookkeeper for a financial company, Charter Hospital, Broadlawns Hospital, and her husband's painting business. She also drove a school bus. In her free time, Joy and Ed enjoyed working in their flower and vegetable gardens. The grandkids were the highlight of their lives. In earlier years, they enjoyed square dancing. Joy also loved sports, reading her Bible, and nature, especially the mountains. She taught Catechism for 30 years at St. Mary's and Holy Trinity in Des Moines and at St. Bernard's in Osceola, Iowa. She went on retreats with the teenagers, took charge of the church bazaars, and took care of the flowers of the altar. Over the years she was a leader in Campfire Girls, Blue Birds, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.

Joy's spirit has touched so many lives. She walked each step of her journey with dignity, love, and laughter- an example to all who knew her.

Preceding her in death were her parents; infant son, Edward Paul; brothers, Jim and Jerry Crees; and sister, Joyce Crees.

Survivors include her husband Ed Weir of Grand River; children: Sheryl & Jay Coleman of Urbandale, Iowa; Jana & Jody Arment of Grimes, Iowa; Donella & Jim Wright of Gilbert Arizona; Debra & Chris McCombs of Johnston, Iowa; and Ed Weir of Cumming, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Andrew Wright, Jason Arment, Alexandra Wright, Jocelyn Arment, Chelsea McCombs, Joshua Arment, Christopher McCombs, Caitlyn Weir, and Cole Weir; brothers: Joe & Maxine Crees of Helena, Montana, Jon Crees of Grand River, David Crees of Pacific Junction, Iowa; and Jesse & Teresa Crees of West Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
