SPENCER, Barbara R., 82, of Loveland, Colorado died April 27, 2006 at Good Samaritan Village Health Care Center in Loveland. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service was held May 2 at Good Samaritan Village Spiritual Life Center with Pastor George Huber officiating. A memorial Service and burial of cremains will be conducted at a later date at the Leon Cemetery in Leon, Iowa.

Memorial contributions to the Heritage Square Activities Program at Good Samaritan Village in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home.

In Barbara's memory, a memorial has been established at the Alzheimer's Memorial Garden at Stapleton Park in Denver, Colorado.

BARBARA R. SPENCER ... Barbara R. Spencer, 82, of Loveland passed away at Good Samaritan Village Health Care Center in Loveland on Thursday, April 27, 2006.

Barbara Ruth Spencer was born in Van Wert, Iowa, on September 17, 1923, the daughter of Carl H. and Edith I. [Tiedje] Upfield. Barbara was raised and graduated from Van Wert High School, class of 1941, and Barbara attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa in 1941-1942.

On October 21, 1943, Barbara enlisted into the U.S. Navy, and served as a Yeoman Second Class, she was honorably discharged on February 18, 1946.

While serving in the U.S. Navy, Barbara met and married Ralph B. Spencer in Weldon, Iowa on January 13, 1946.

Barbara and Ralph relocated to Loveland in 1954 from Osceola, Iowa.

Barbara was employed by Espsilon Sigma Alpha in Loveland from 1954-1965, then Colorado State University, College of Forestry and Watershed Management, and Colorado State University Extension Services from 1965-1985. Barb was honored as Outstanding Extension Secretary in 1983. She retired in 1985.

After she retired, Barb was active in two ladies' golf leagues in Loveland. Barb and her husband Ralph spent many winters in Arizona after their retirement. Another lifelong goal Barbara had was to learn to swim. As an adult, Barb loved to swim laps at the Chilson Recreation Center in Loveland.

Barbara was honored as Elk Lady of the year at Loveland Elks Lodge #1051 in 1995-1996.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Loveland.

She is survived by one son, Steve Spencer and wife Mindy of Loveland, CO. Three grandchildren, Zack Spencer of Broomfield, CO., Luke Spencer and wife Katherine of Des Moines, Iowa, Heather Mahoney and husband Shane of Denver, CO. Three great-grandchildren, Austin and Alonzo Spencer of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sullivan Mahoney of Denver, Co. One brother, James Upfield and wife Romona of Dallas, TX, and one sister, Betty Potter of Grimes, Iowa.

Barbara's husband Ralph B. Spencer, preceded her in death on August 8, 2005, and one infant son, Richard Spencer, and four brothers, Robert Upfield, Worth Upfield, Murry Upfield and Dick Upfield.
