DEATH NOTICE:

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa September 14, 2011)

STRASBURG, Nelma, 78, of Leon, Iowa, died on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Westview Acres Care Center in Leon, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday and family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.

NELMA IRENE PERKS STRASBURG ... Nelma Irene Strasburg, age 78 of Leon, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Henry and Opal Vivian [Earley] Mitchell, was born February 2, 1933 on a farm southeast of Lamoni, Iowa. She died at Westview Acres in Leon on Saturday, September 10, 2011.

Nelma's father died when she was eleven years old. Her mother remarried William "Bill" Akes. Nelma graduated from Leon High School. On March 10, 1951 Nelma married Curtis Duane Perks. They were blessed with three children, Richard, Ronald And Carla. Nelma and Duane divorced 16 years later. In 1970 she married Bernard Strasburg. He had sons, Ted and David. They later divorced.

Nelma worked for nine years at Great Plains Bag Company, then Meredith Corporation for eleven years. She retired in July 1992.

Nelma started a baby clothing business, NelMade by Nelma. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, flower gardening, and square dancing. She loved animals, especially her kitties.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather; and sister Alice Lorraine Mitchell. Survivors include her children, Rick Perks and wife Leslie of Spicewood, Texas, Ron Perks and wife Susan of Des Moines, Iowa, and Carla Perks of Leon; grandchildren, Shayna Perks, Alisha Sody, Sonja Perks, Cassandra Perks, Rebecca "Becca" Perks, Curtis Perks, Jessica Evans, Dustin Evans, and Jeremy Lisle; Seven great grandchildren; stepchildren, Ted and David Strasburg, both of Mercer, Missouri; step siblings, Betty Schaffer of Osceola, Iowa, Gary Akes and wife Merlene of Runnells, Iowa, and Donnie Akes of Des Moines; and other relatives and friends.
