DEATH NOTICE:

BARNES, Matthew Eugene, 35, of Leon, Iowa, died on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at his home. Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Rev. Lyle Ball officiating. Family will greet friends from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.

MATTHEW EUGENE BARNES ... Matthew Eugene Haines Barnes, age 35 of Leon, Iowa, son of Samuel Eugene and Vicky Louise [Dyer] Barnes, was born November 17, 1975 in Des Moines, Iowa and died at home on September 7, 2011.

Matthew grew up in Truro, Iowa. He was diagnosed with juvenile onset diabetes at age twelve. Matthew graduated from I-35 High School in 1994. He then worked in construction as a welder for New Virgina Seed and Grain until health complications in 2000.

Matthew has been lovingly cared for at home the past 11 years by his mother, father, brothers, and family. He liked having his two children, Stacey Ann and Matthew Eugene, Jr., visit him. Matthew was able to smile, laugh, and respond with his eyes. His family enjoyed watching Matt Jr. grow up with many mannerisms and likenesses to his Dad. Matthew loved his family, and they were very dedicated to giving him excellent care at home.

In earlier years, Matthew enjoyed Demo Derbying - building and driving demo cars all over southern Iowa, and mud-running. He "lived in the garage" working on cars with his Dad and brothers. As soon as daughter Stacey was old enough to write, she spray painted her name and a pink heart on Matthew's Demo car. Matthew also enjoyed hunting deer, and son Matt followed in his footsteps. Nephew Zach Barnes spent a lot of his growing up time with Matthew, and they built birdhouses and sneaked off to the Dairy Queen.

During his hospital stay at Des Moines General in 2000, Matthew was baptized.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Chuck Barnes; maternal grandparents Frank and Freida Alloway; Grandpa George Husted; brother Charles Eugene Barnes; uncle Mark Addison Dyer; and cousin Mark Addison Dyer, Jr.

Surviving are his mother and father, Vicky and Sam Barnes of Leon; daughter Stacey Ann and son Matthew Eugene, Jr. of Hopeville, Iowa; brothers: Samuel Eugene Barnes , Jr. and wife Cameo, Lucas Camron Eugene Barnes and wife Holly of Leon, and Gregory Paul Biard and wife Chris of Ankeny, Iowa; grandmother Shirley Barnes and Uncle Dave Barnes and wife Kim of Des Moines; nephews and niece: Camron, Lucas, Colton, Marcus, Charlie, Zachary, Justin, and Austin Barnes, Taylor Brammer, and Juliann Houk; and other relatives and friends.
