DEATH NOTICE:

WHITTINGTON, Violet May Johnston, 86, of Leon, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, with Rev. Paul I. Miller officiating. Burial was in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

VIOLET MAY JOHNSTON WHITTINGTON ... Violet May Johnston Whittington, age 86 of Leon, Iowa, the daughter of John Arvid, originally from Westansjo Kilafors, Sweden, and Pearl Anna [Klinefeldt] Morine, originally from Gross Teshendorf, Germany, was born February 27, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa. She passed from her Earthly Home to her Heavenly Home on July 6, 2011 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Violet grew up in the Leon area and attended country school. She married the neighbor boy, Chester Kenneth Johnston, on February 2, 1942 at Bethany, Missouri. Three children blessed this union, Carolyn Kay, Debra may, and Kevin Gene. Over their 41 years of marriage, the lived and pastored churches in Leon, Bussey, Ottumwa, and Keokuk, Iowa before Chester's death on October 4, 1983. On November 1, 1997, violet married Wayne Leroy Whittington in Leon, Iowa. He passed away on March 8, 1999.

Violet enjoyed caring for and nurturing her children. She also assumed the responsibility of being a pastor's wife. she enjoyed flowers, gardening, embroidering, birds, being outside, holidays and family gatherings, bright sunny days, and a good laugh. she also lived country and western paraphernalia. She was a member of the Eastside church of the Nazarene in Des Moines.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband's Rev. Chester K. Johnston and Wayne Whittington; brothers, Herbert, Robert, and Richard Morine; and sister Rosetta Gatton and husband Roger.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Kay and Paul Miller of Des Moines, Deb and Charles Cooper of Leon, and Kevin and Angela Johnston of Gilbert, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Danny, Melody, Darron, Dustin, Krystle, Kenneth, Noah, Miranda, and Michael; eight great grandchildren, Ashley, Austin, Amber, Grant, Bryce, Raegan, Summer, and Max; sister Darlene Cattell of Cambria, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Rova Johnston of Leon, Phyllis Morine and LeeAlta Morine, both of Des Moines, and May Morine of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
