Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa July 6, 2011)

AVERY WEST ... Avery T. West, age 99 of Leon, Iowa, son of Oscar and Blanche [Fullerton] West, was born March 4, 1912 northwest of Van Wert, Iowa and died June 27, 2011 at West View Acres in Leon.

Avery grew up on the farm. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed overseas and received a Purple Heart.

Avery lived his adult life in Leon. He was employed with the Iowa Department of Transportation for many years and drove a road grader. Following his retirement, Avery continued to work around town - mowing, blading, and plowing gardens. He liked to stay busy.

Avery always planted a big garden and shared with his family and neighbors. He enjoyed chopping wood, watching and feeding the squirrels, sitting on his front porch, and visiting with people at the Leon, Garden Grove, and Grand River Senior Meal Sites.

Nephew Floyd Collins and wife Shirley helped look after Avery, and he was able to remain in his own home until entering Westview Acres in January 2008. Avery enjoyed holiday meals and visits with the Collins family, and visits with nieces and nephews Sue and Don Ruley, Orva Jr. and Pat West, Joyce and Dick Bethards, and Lucy Mace and family. Other survivors include nieces and nephews Jack West, Linnea Juarez, Willard West, Sheila Compton, and Bill West. Preceding Avery in death were his parents; sisters Gertie Collins Dunn and Dora Massey; and brothers: Elba, Clark, Ira, Garvin, Orva and Dennis West.
