BURKETT, Ruby Jean, 63, of Leon, Iowa, died August 1, 2006 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon. Cremation arrangements were through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon.

RUBY JEAN BURKETT ... Ruby Jean Burkett, age 63 of Leon, Iowa, eldest child of Ellis Eugene and Rella [Beniger] Hill, was born July 14, 1943 in Paris, Arkansas and died August 1, 2006 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon.

When Ruby was six years old, her family moved to Shafter, California in 1949. Ruby grew up there and graduated from Shafter High School.

Ruby was a homemaker and mother. Her children, Karen Lynn, Charles Dean, and Schalie Jean, were an important part of her life. In 1993, Ruby and Charles moved to Houston, Texas to be near Karen. Ruby worked as a cashier in the Webster WalMart in the Houston suburb of Webster. After Karen moved to Lamoni, Iowa, Ruby and Charles also moved to Lamoni to be near Karen. Ruby transferred to the Bethany WalMart. She enjoyed her job as a cashier - being with people and seeing all the little babies. She retired in 2004 due to health complications.

Ruby and Charles have made their home at Parkview Apartments in Leon the past year. Ruby liked to read, knit, and watch "Animal Planet" and the food channel. She enjoyed bird watching, having squirrel homes, and rescuing animals. Ruby loved her children and grandchildren and spending time with her family. She attended Lamoni Baptist Church when her health allowed.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Ron Hopkins.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Rohrer of League City, Texas; son Charles Burkett of Leon; daughter Schalie Fischer of Florida grandson Matthew Corey Rohrer and grand-daughter Tasha Lyann Rohrer of League City, Texas; sister Judy Hopkins of Shafter, California; two brothers, Larry Hill and wife Bonnie and Robert Hill and wife Denice, all of Bakersfield, California; nieces and nephews; special friends and neighbor Delaine Ploessel of Leon; and friends.
