DEATH NOTICE:

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa March 30, 2011)

HECKATHORN, FERN ANNA, 91, of Ankeny, Iowa, (formerly of the Decatur County area) died on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Mill Pond Health Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa. Graveside Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Van Wert Cemetery in Van Wert, Iowa. Arrangements were through Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Presbyterian Homes and Services of Ankeny, Iowa.

FERN HECKATHORN ... Fern Anna Heckathorn, daughter of William Elmer Kivett and Mary Elizabeth [Busch] Kivett was born November 27, 1919 in Union County, Iowa and passed from this life Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Mill Pond Health Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa at 91 years of age.

Fern spent her childhood living near Lorimor attending the Lorimor School. She continued her education in Peru graduating from Peru High School in 1926. Fern was united in marriage Early in her life and was blessed with a daughter, Annette. She was later united in marriage to Wayne Heckathorn on January 10, 1947 at Des Moines, Iowa.

Fern and Wayne rented various farms and purchased one between Garden Grove and LeRoy in Decatur County. It was their home for 41 years. She moved to Osceola after Wayne's death in 1998. Fern moved to Ankeny in 2002 to Mill Pond Assisted Living to be closer to her family. Throughout her life she enjoyed gardening, flowers, quilting, canning and raising chickens. Fern was baptized in the Methodist Church and while living in Osceola she attended the Baptist Church.

Those relatives who preceded in death were her parents; husband Wayne in 1998; and sister, Lela Marker.

She leaves to cherish her memory; daughter, Annette Ruth of Clive, IA; grandchildren, Charles Robin Ruth and Mary Ann Ruth both of Des Moines; great grandchildren, Jacob Ruth and Cecilia Jefferson both of Des Moines as well as other relatives and friends.
