Decatur County Journal
October l4, l909

The community was greatly shocked when the
electric wire flashed the
intelligence of the death of MRS. KEELER,
wife of J.W. KEELER, which
event occurred at the home of MR. KEELER's
daughter, MRS. O.A. BASSETT,
near Wichita, Kan. MR. and MRS. KEELER
set out on a western tour under
the advice of her physician, hoping it
might prove beneficial. They
attended the G.A.R. reunion at Salt Lake
and visited Yellowstone Park
and other places in Nevada and Colorado.
They traveled by easy stages
and rested sufficient length for bodily
recuperation. MRS. KEELER
gained in strength. Returning by way of
Kansas, asthma set it and the
heart, whose action was weak, refused to
discharge its functions, and on
Tuesday, Oct. 5, she left the earthly
habitation for the Heavenly home.

MRS. KEELER, whose maiden name was
GRAYSON, was born in Adams County,
Penn. The family removed to Illinois and
in l87l came to Iowa. She
made a profession of faith before leaving
Pennsylvania, uniting with the
Lutheran Church, the church of her
parents. In Illinois she joined the
Presbyterian Church at Canton, and on
coming to Iowa joined the
Presbyterian Church at Grand River and
later the same church at Leon, of
which she was a member when called to the
church triumphant.

MR. and MRS. KEELER were united in
marriage Feb. 4, l904. The sympathy
of the community goes out to the surviving
partner of this union whose
happy domestic life is thus arrested. It
deserves to be said of MRS.
KEELER that her life was one worthy of a
Christian, a life of service.
She lived to minister, not be ministered
unto. Her sunny disposition
brightened the sick room and lured the
invalid to hope and health. The
funeral service was conducted by Rev. G.D.
Gurley, her former Pastor,
who spoke words of comfort based on Col.
l:5--"The hope laid up in
Heaven."
