Dick attended Wion Country School at Terre Haute, completing the 8th grade. In December 1950 he was joined in marriage to Martha Marie Norris in a winter blizzard. To this union five girls were born. In 1954, Dick joined the U.S. Army and after training at Fort Lee, Virginia, he was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Dick completed his service in February of 1956 when he moved his young family back to Iowa. He continued his military career in the Iowa Nation Guard until March of 1978.

In 1988 Dick and Martha, along with grandson Jim Klever , took the road trip of their lives to Anchorage, Alaska.
