MARY C. HUGHES (Marion, Iowa) ... Mary Celia Hughes, 83, of Village Ridge Assisted Living in Marion, Iowa, died Sunday, December 30, 2007, from age related complications while under hospice care at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2008, at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at 4601 Douglas Avenue, in Des Moines, Iowa. Entombment will follow at Masonic Mausoleum in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mary was born January 20, 1924 in the Township of Garden Grove, Iowa. After graduating from LeRoy High School, she went to welding school and worked for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines from 1942-1951. Mary belonged to the company's flying club and shared with friends in the ownership of an airplane that she flew.

She reunited with a former high school classmate upon his return from the Army after WWII and married her husband, Ivan, on May 25, 1947. They made their home in Des Moines for 57 years, where she first provided home-care for their three sons. In 1968, Mary began working at the Meredith Corporation, performing key-punch and data entry. She retired in 1987.

In 2005, to be nearer family, she moved to her apartment at Village Ridge Assisted Living in Marion, Iowa, where she remained active. Mary was a member of the American Legion, Eastern Star, and VFW.

Survivors include her three sons, Wayne and wife Beverly of Plano, TX, Gary and wife Kathy of Marion, IA and Paul and wife Gale of Manhattan, KS; one brother Wilbur Boyce of Columbus, OH; one brother-in-law, Dean Hughes of Aurora, CO; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ivan; and her parents, Ulrick and Iva Boyce.

The family will greet friends fro 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Memorial may be made to the Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church.
