Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa December 12, 2007)

CLEONE WILCOXSON ... Cleone Wilcoxson was born February 20, 1909 to Harve E. and Nancy Ella Taylor Wilcoxson in Harrison County, MO. He passed away in Lamoni, IA on December 3, 2007 at the age of 98.

He grew up on the family farm in Harrison County, MO, and attended Coats Country School, north of the farm, and then Lamoni High School. He fell in love with Avis Irene Anderson and they were married in 1930. Together they purchased a farm adjacent to his parents' farm in 1931. Three children were born to their marriage: Phyllis Lavonne, William Neil and Larry Gene.

Cleone sold the farm in 1949 and moved to Lamoni where he worked for the Coop Elevator for one year and for the Coop Lumber Yard for 25 years. After retiring from the lumber yard, he worked part time for the city of Lamoni for 7 years keeping the parks and roadsides mowed.

He sold his Lamoni home in 2000 and moved to Crown Colony where he enjoyed the companionship of old friends and made many new ones including the caring staff at the facility. In the fall of 2005 he moved to the Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center, because of failing health.

He was well known for his stewardship of the soil, his livestock and his equipment. He took great joy in sharing work such as haying, threshing and cutting fire wood with his neighbors. He was always willing to spend his free time helping anyone who needed assistance.

He particularly loved nature, and could frequently be seen walking for exercise, gardening and feeding the squirrels. While at Crown Colony he became an expert domino player. He had a special rapport with children of all ages, especially his adult grandchildren who gathered annually in Lamoni to visit with him.

Cleone was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, his son Bill, his parents, two infant siblings, sisters, Mary, Lylia and Helen, and brother Darl. He is survived by daughter Phyllis Werges and husband Byron of Canandaigua, NY, son Larry and wife Linda of Atkinson, NE, daughter-in-law Kathleen Wilcoxson of Eagleville, MO, 7 grandchildren including Nancy Stroberg and husband Jeff of Jefferson, IA, Shery Chase of Des Moines, IA, Jacky Garrett and husband Lee of Simpsonville, SC, Ann Wall and husband Michael of Paradise Valley, AZ, Jeanne Wilcoxson and husband Greg Lussky of Tucson, AZ, Lawrence Werges and wife Jennifer of Canandaigua, NY and Keith Wilcoxson of Eureka, MO, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, sister Maxine Trammell and husband LeRoy of Lamoni, and brother-in-law Marvin Stafford of Rockford, IL.
