Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa June 23, 2010)

JAMES H. HORNEY ... James Henry Horney, age 89, son of Lee Bevins and Grace Merle [Campbell] Horney, was born September 10, 1920 in rural Decatur County, Iowa and died June 16, 2010 at Afton Care Center in Afton, Iowa.

James grew up in Decatur County and graduated from Leon High School in Leon, Iowa in 1938. On December 12, 1941 James married Mable Emiline Corsbie in Princeton, Missouri. Three sons were born to this union: Robert James, Richard Eugene, and Russell Wayne. The family made their home in rural Van Wert, Iowa.

James farmed until the fall of 1970. He then began a 22-year career with HyVee Food Stores. James and Mable lived in Ankeny, Iowa four years when he started at the Des Moines #2 East Euclid HyVee. They moved back to the family farm in the early 1970's, and James was the produce manager at Osceola HyVee. He retired in 1992. James and Mable moved into Osceola, Iowa in 2004.

James was a very hard worker who enjoyed farming and horses. He liked fishing with his sons on rainy days, family trips, and attending the boys' school activities. James was also active in 4-H with his sons and was a 4-H leader. In later years, James and Mable enjoyed coffee, meals, and visiting with people at the Leon Dairy Queen and the Osceola HyVee Kitchen.

Through the years, James loved having all the grandkids together at the farm for their summer stays - driving the lawn mowers, laughing, and just being together. James enjoyed life and his family.

James was baptized at a young age and was a longtime member of the Leon Chruch of Christ.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Lee and Grace Horney; sisters Erma Imhoff and Helen Horney; son Russell Harney; one sister-in-law; and 5 brothers-in-law.

Surviving are James' wife of 58 years, Mable Horney of Afton, Iowa; sons Bob Harney and wife Rita of Carlisle, Iowa and Richard Harney and wife Saundra of Tarkio, Missouri; daughter -in-law Thresa Harney of Wichita, Kansas; 9 grandchildren: Erin Martin (Jayson), Aliza Williams (Mark), LeAnn Randolph (David), Jeremy Austin (Kate), Nyela Harney, Latisha Alsys (Jordan), Kylene Defenbaugh (Shaun, U.S. Army CW2), Nathan Harney (Angie), and Kris Shaw (Jake); 18 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mildred Adams and Pat Corsbie; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
