VETA ALICE HAGAN ... Veta Alice Hagan was born March 17, 1909 in Decatur County, Ia., the daughter of Enos Clark and Lillie Trembly, and passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997 at the Decatur County Hospital, at the age of 88 years.

She grew up and attended school at Holden, Davis City and Pleasanton, Ia. She graduated from Leon High School near the top of her class. She accepted the Lord at an early age, was baptized and became a member of Holden Baptist Church.

She prepared to be a teacher, but on Dec. 5, 1928, she and Mervil Hagan were married at her parents' home.

The family went west to Colorado, Oregon and Washington in 1937, but in 1939 they returned to Missouri and purchased a farm in Lindley Township. They joined the Bethel Methodist Church where she planned many programs, taught Sunday School, served as Sunday school superintendent and worked with the MYF. She was Chaplain of the Queen Victoria chapter of the Order of Eastern star at Pleasanton.

Mrs. Hagan worked as a nurses aide at the Decatur County Hospital and Elder Lane Manor at Leon. One night on her way home from work, she was involved in an automobile accident and never resumed working or driving. After Mr. Hagan died in April 1988, she lived alone on the farm until she moved to Princeton in 1993.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; parents-in-law Jim and Bessie Hagan; sisters Thelma Hollcroft, Florence Graham and Twila Trembly; brothers William, Donald and Charlie, grandson Doran McIntosh, brothers in law: Cecil Hagan, Gerald Graham, Champ Spencer, Dean Flora and Clell and Leo Dunn; sisters-in-law Lenora and Mildred Hagan, Irma and Lois Dunn and Elsie Trembly.

Mrs. Hagan is survived by a daughter, Athel McIntosh and husband, Jim, Lebanon, Mo.; two sons, Danny Hagan and wife, Brenda, Princeton and Donald Hagan and wife, Michele, Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Winona Flora, Hood River, Ore., and Marie Spencer, Tucson, Aris.; and by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Bethel Methodist held at the Bethel Methodist Church northwest of Princeton, on Friday, Nov. 14, with Rev. Jennie Vertrees officiating, under the direction of the Slade-O'Donnell funeral Home, Leon. Burial was in the Bethel Cemetery.
