Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, January 1, 1914

SUSAN WARNER was born in Dark County, Ohio, April 3, 1830, and died December
28th, 1913. She was married Aug. 15, 1850, to CARL JACOB HOFFMAN, Dark
County, Ohio, Mr. HOFFMAN dying Dec. 12, 1858. To them were born four
children; C.W. HOFFMAN, of Leon, Iowa; HIMENA HOFFMAN PARRISH, of Des Moines
Iowa; and FRANK and LEO, who died in infancy.

Mrs. HOFFMAN was again married July 15, 1861, to Dr. G.W. BAKER, of Leon,
Iowa. Dr. BAKER died Jan. 10, 1909. To them were born two children, GEO. W
BAKER, of Leon, Iowa; and JAMES I. BAKER, of St. John, Washington.

Mrs. BAKER died Dec. 28, 1913. She was the last of a family of eight
children. She came to Iowa in 1854, settling in the vicinity of Leon. At
that time the place was known as Independence, there being but three or four
families here and but one store. Goods for family and domestic use were
brought from points on the Mississippi River, and it was a trying time for
the venturesome pioneers who then braved the wilds and prepared later
developments.

Mrs. BAKER early associated herself with the Christian Church and many are
those living today who can testify to her loyalty to the plea of her people
and the consecration to every religious duty and privilege.

The social duties also of those days and later often called her into many an
active ministry of Love. When word of distress was brought them no one was
more ready or willing to drop the affairs of home and spend nights and days
ministering to her neighbors in need.

She was always blessed with a sturdy constitution, but even she, after
months of suffering, must yield and join that caravan moving the mysterious
realms of the blest to await the incoming of loved ones in the last reunion.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 1913, at the Christian Church,
the sermon being delivered by the pastor of the church, Rev. James W.
Johnson, assisted by Rev. Guy Fansher, of the M.E. Church. Interment was in
the Leon Cemetery. "For He giveth His beloved sleep."
