J.M. CAIN, real estate operator, and two clients, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Beard,
of Ohio, were instantly killed at 2:45 o'clock the afternoon when CAIN's big
Cadillac car was struck by an out bound Pacific Electric car at the McFadden
Street crossing.

CAIN and Beard, caught in the car, were carried with the wrecked machine a
distance of seventy-five feet, and Mrs. Beard was dragged 150 feet before
her mangled form was dropped between the rails.

Conductor S.H. Trask and Motorman F.E. Bates, were running the electric car,
which was well filled with people. CAIN, known as a careful driver, was
going east on McFadden Street. The electric car whistled. Evidently a
house on the north side of the road hid the car from view. The electric car
struck the big grey machine amidships, shoved it along the tracks and threw
it to the east side of the tracks, CAIN and Beard, a middle aged man, were
taken fro the wreckage, laid out upon the ground.

The woman's body was found between the rails. Coroner Winbigler arrived a
few minutes after the accident. The car ran 100 yards before it stopped.
From letters found in Mrs. Beard's handbag, it was learned that the couple
had been stopping at 915 South Olive Street, Los Angeles. They were being
shown real estate when the accident occurred. J.M. CAIN, well known all
over the county, was a member of the Santa Ana School Board, as well as a
real estate dealer. -Santa Anna Daily Register.

J.M. CAIN was born and raised in Woodland Township. He married ALLIE M.
HALL, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. HALL. They moved to California
in the spring of 1893, and since made that their home. Five children were
born to this union, one dying in infancy. MORRIS, the oldest is a lawyer in
Los Angeles; WILLARD, HOMER and ONITA are still in school and with their
mother are left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and
father. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. A.W. HUTCHINSON, of Mt. Ayr; Mrs.
W.T. LANE, of Woodland, and two sisters, Mrs. STELLA DUEFEE and Mrs. MELL
HEPTONSTALH, of California, and a brother, CHAS. CAIN, of Benton, Iowa.
This is a very sad blow to his family and his many friends. His Iowa
friends which were many, deeply deplore his untimely death and sympathize
with his bereaved family in this sad hour.
