Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, May 15, 1913

ELIZABETH SMITH LONG was born near Terre Haute, Indiana, October 14, 1840,
and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.E. DRAKE, near
Mount Ayr, April 27, 1913, being at the time of her death 72 years, 6 months
and 13 days old.

When but two years old her mother died and while still young her father
moved to Decatur County, Iowa, and afterwards to this county. September 14,
1856, she was married to LEWIS T. LONG, and they began their married life on
the farm which Mr. LONG had entered from the government in 1855. This farm
lies four miles south of Ellston and is well known to the people of this
community. Many years of their life were spent on this farm.

Ten children were born to this union, two deceased are JOSEPH, who died in
infancy, and Mrs. JANE ROBERTS, who died in 1892. Those living are Mrs. M.E
GALE, of Murray; Mrs. T.A. ERVIN, of Kellerton; Mrs. RILLA SKELTON, of
Minneapolis; N.G. LONG, of Des Moines; Mrs. W.E. DRAKE, near Mount Ayr; J.W.
LONG, of Leon; F.W. LONG, of Beaconsfield, and Mrs. R.E. FENDER, of Tingley.

For a number of years Mrs. LONG has not enjoyed good health but last
December her health began failing rapidly. All that kind hearts and loving
hands could do was of no avail. Her last suffering was borne with great
patience. She was a model for the living. She was of most excellent
Christian character and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

The funeral services were held at the High Point Church, conducted by Rev.
Tennant, of Ellston, and Rev. Cable, of Mount Ayr, and she was laid to rest
in the Oliver Cemetery.
