JOHN N., the eldest son of JOEL E. and MARY (HALL) PAINTER, was born in the State of Kentucky, Dec. ll, l848. He died in Pleasanton, Iowa, May l4, l924, aged 74 years, 5 months and 3 days. About l854, he came with his parents to Decatur County, Iowa, and his father entered a piece of land in Bloomington Township east of and near where Tuskeego is now located, where they lived for two or three years, when they sold the farm and removed to Pleasanton, Iowa, about l857 or l858, and where the elder PAINTERS engaged in the hotel business for many years, and the hotel known as the Painter House was situated on the corner where the Pleasanton Bank is now located. The Elder MR. PAINTER had been a steamboat man on the Mississippi River, and for some years after he settled in Pleasanton,
he went to the Mississippi River and was employed as a mate on the merchandise vessels plying on that river. Some times he took his son, JOHN with him where he also found employment on the steamboats.

A little later, JOHN learned the harness makers trade, and for some years he was engaged in the harness business in Pleasanton, and where his father engaged with him in the latter seventies.

Pleasanton has been the home of JOHN N. PAINTER continuously for about sixty-seven years, and where for the past fifty years he has been engaged in business, thus making him one of the oldest business men in the town, and the longest inhabitant in point of years.

In l865, JOHN N. PAINTER was joined in marriage to MISS SARAH A. HORN, who departed this life, Dec. 25, l873. In l876, MR. PAINTER was again married to MRS. ELLA RICE, with whom he lived until l898, when he was again bereft of his wife by death.

On May 8th, l90l, he was united in marriage with MISS DOT WILLIAMSON WEAVER, who is now left to mourn the departure of her husband, and the father of her nine children, named as follows: LUCILLE B., PEARL E., now the wife of ELBERT BAIN, of Cainsville; JOHN CARL, GRACE H., ORVA W., OTTO V., J. WILLIAM, PAULINE H., and MARGARET DOT, who were all present with their father at least a part of the time during his last sickness. MR. PAINTER had three brothers and one sister, of these, one brother, FILLMORE, of Smithshire, Illinois, alone survives.

MR. PAINTER has been in failing health for several months, and about five weeks ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, or paralysis, from which he was never able to recover full consciousness, although all that the best physicians, and loving hands and hearts could do for him, was done, and he lingered until ll p.m. on the night of May l4th, when his earthly life was closed, and he entered into the higher life.

For many years, forty or more, MR. PAINTER was an active worker and member in both the M.E. Church, and the Sunday School, and until failing health required him to cease from those labors.

MR. PAINTER was instrumental in organizing and founding the Pleasanton Telephone Co., and active in building and caring for the workings of the same, until a few months ago, when on account of enfeebled health he had to lay the work down and entrust it to his son, CARL.

MR. PAINTER was an honest, conscientious, industrious man, a good citizen, a kind companion and an indulgent parent. In his earlier life, MR. PAINTER filled many of the local offices, and for many years was the Postmaster at Pleasanton, and in all of his business affairs he was kind, and accommodating, painstaking and trustworthy. Verily, Pleasanton has lost a good and honored citizen. The sympathy goes out to MRS. PAINTER and family in their loss.

The funeral was conducted by his Pastor, Rev. W.E. Clark, from the M.E. Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, May l6th, and his remains were laid to rest in the Hamilton Cemetery near Pleasanton.

A CARD -- We desire to thank the many kind friends who did so much for us in our great affliction, the death of our beloved husband and father, and assure you all we deeply appreciate your friendship.

MRS. J.N. PAINTER and CHILDREN.
