Thursday, May l5, l924DR. JOSEPH EUGENE BRITTAN, youngest child of DANIEL and CHARLOTTE BRITTAN, was born in Danville, New York, October l9, l860, and died at Decatur, Iowa, May 9, l924, aged 63 years, 6 months and 20 days.
When a small boy his parents moved to Esperance, New York, and here he grew to manhood. In l880 he entered the New York Homepathic Medical College, in New York City, from which he graduated in l884, and soon after began practicing his profession in Potsdam, New York. In l894 he returned to New York and entered Belview Medical College to specialize in the eye, ear, nose and throat. About two years later he located at Elwood, Nebraska. In August, l899, he was united in marriage to MISS MAVIS HAYDEN; to this union three children were born, one of whom died in infancy. In October, l9l3, he located in Decatur, Iowa, where he had since practiced his profession. He was a member of St. Lawrence Chapter, of Potsdam, New York, of St. Lawrence Commandery No. 28, Knights Templar, of Canton, New York, the Shrine Temple at Lincoln, Nebraska, and O.E.S. Chapter No. 66 at Elwood, Nebraska.
DR. BRITTAN's illness began about five years ago, following an attack of influenza. He did not become seriously ill until about a year ago. Last fall he went to Des Moines and spent some time in the Lutheran Hospital where the best physicians of Des Moines did all they could for him. He came home and the Leon Doctors did all within their power to help him, but the time came for him as it will for us, when no eartly power can help, and our only help must be in God the Father of us all.
He leaves besides his widow, two children, MRS. MARJORI BROWN, of Rawlins, Wyoming, and HOWARD E. BRITTAN, of Decatur. Two sisters, MRS. ANNA STREET, Oneonto, New York; MRS. ALIDA JONES, Esperance, New York; one brother, JAMES BRITTAN, Albany, New York.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock, Monday. The Episcopal service was read by the Rev. Mrs. A.E. Porter, Pastor of the Decatur M.E. Church. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Mabel Robbins, Mrs. Jessie Townsend, Mr. Ollie Walker and Mr. Bruce Townsend, with Miss Fanette Walker at the piano. The floral offerings were very beautiful. The Masonic Order had charge of the services at the grave, three lodges being represented, Grand River, Leon and Decatur.
DR. BRITTAN will be missed by the people of Decatur and in all the country round about. He was our only physician. Since he has been taken we can only say, "Thy will be done." The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their loss.
