Thursday, December 20, l923EDGAR KENNETH, son of E.J. and HAZEL HINES, was born Sept. l9, l9l9, and died at his home in Grand River, Dec. 9, l923, aged 7 years, 2 months and 20 days. He was a member of the Methodist Sunday School all his short life. His grandmother was Cradle Roll Superintendent and enrolled him as soon as he was born.
At the age of five years, he entered the public school and has done very good work ever since. KENNETH was such a friendly and lovable child that everybody loved him. He was very fond of all animal life and was especially attached to horses.
He was greatly interested in his Sunday School and the Bible stories learned there. He asked his teacher once if Jesus was a little boy like him and if he could run and play with other children. In the class work he was eager to be the first to respond to a question. He was greatly interested in the near approach of Christmas and when they talked of a program, he asked if they would want boys like him to take part. He was in his place a week ago last Sunday. Soon after he went home that day, his temperature came up and he complained of not feeling well. On Wednesday, a physician was called. He grew steadily worse until on Sunday morning when the end came at 8:20. Doubtless he was in time to attend Sunday School in Heaven that morning.
Although of tender years, he had already shown much interest in spiritual teaching. Five weeks ago he came forward to partake of the communion service and talked about what he had done when the family got home. On Wednesday in the evening in the midst of great pain, when papa and mama and the doctor had done all they could to relieve him, he asked his mama if she thought Jesus could help him. Soon afterward he became unconscious but who can doubt that the dear Christ heard his cry and carried him safely over.
His loss is keenly felt by his parents, one sister, four grandparents, three aunts, two uncles and four cousins. Besides these near relatives there are many others and friends that will sadly miss this sweet spirit from our midst. Besides the above named relatives, he also leaves an aged great grandfather.
The funeral services, under the direction of L.O. McVay, were held at the M.E. Church, Tuesday at l0:30. They were attended by a large number of sorrowing friends and neighbors. The band boys from Decatur were present and sat in a body. Many other out of town people were present. The floral offerings were many and of wonderful beauty. The music was furnished by a large choir. The interment was made in the Grand River Cemetery.
