MAE SOWASH, second daughter of JACOB and MARY (BOUSLOG) SOWASH, was born in Madison County, Iowa, May 20th, l862 and died in Davis City, Iowa, on Wednesday evening, Nov. 2lst, l923, aged 6l years, 6 months and l day.

In the spring of l866 she came with her parents to Pleasanton, where her father engaged in farming until the spring of l875, when he sold out and moved to Taylor County, and bought a farm about 4 miles northwest of Bedford, where he continued to reside until the spring of l88l, he sold again and bought and improved a farm about 6 miles east of Conway in Taylor County. The subject of this sketch made her hime with them until the 27th of Oct., l88l, when she was united in marriage to the now bereaved husband, GEO. P. CAMPBELL, in Bedford, by the Rev. W.D. Bennett, Pastor at that time of the M.E. Church in that place. To this union were born three children, namely BEATRICE, the wife of R.H. MARTZ, of Davis City, who has been with her mother continuously during the past four weeks, since she had a stroke of paralysis on Oct. 25th. BEATRICE is the only child living; CLARA MAE and KARL ERASTUS died in infancy.

MRS. CAMPBELL united with the M.E. Church in Bedford, in l880 in Bedford. After her marriage, she came to Davis City and united with that church here and soon became an active working member both in the church and Sunday School until about six years ago when she became ill, since that time she has been in failing health, and much of the time she has been unable to attend church and Sunday School.

MRS. CAMPBELL was one of the charter members of the Davis City Rebekah Lodge, I.O.O.F. Also a charter member of Grand Valley Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was active in these societies, and in other works of charity and benevolence until her health failed.

She spent some weeks at a Sanitarium at Bethany, Mo., and also was in the Methodist Hospital for treatment where she seemed to decline benefit and all was done for her that science and loving hands could do, but of no avail. During her sickness she expressed herself as being ready to die, if it was the Father's will, and while she hated to leave her loved ones, yet she was resigned to God's will, and put her trust in Him.

Her funeral was preached in the M.E. Church in Davis City on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., by her Pastor of former years, Rev. W.B. Thompson, assisted by the present Pastor, Rev. Clark, and the burial ceremony of the O.E.S. was by her request given, and in the procession the Rebekah Lodge, assisted by members from Leon and Lamoni, acted as an escort to the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, where she was laid to rest.

In her life time she was profuse with her kindly hospitality, as many can testify. She loved her many friends and craved their companionship. They always found in her an amiable and delightful friend. She will long be missed in the community. The large concourse of friends who attended the funeral were a testimony of the place she held for a long period of years. It is a tender thought, that place will now be vacant. Sympathy too deep for words goes out to the sorrowing husband, daughter and all the family and friends, including her two grandchildren, GEORGE W. and CAMPBELL MARTZ.
