SAMUEL OVERHOLTZER was born near Gettysburg, Adams County, Penn., July 3l, l838; departed this life May 6, l923, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 6 days. He was of German parentage and the next youngest of a family of eight children, 6 brothers and 2 sisters, all of whom have preceded him to the better world excepting his aged brother, WILLIAM OVERHOLTZEER, of Grand River, Iowa. He, with his family, came to Decatur County, Iowa, in l870, settling near Grand River. About a year later moving to near Van Wert, Iowa, from there to his present home where he lived 48 years.

Brother OVERHOLTZER united with the German Reformed Church at Emmettsburg, Md., in l859. He and his family were among the founders of the Fairview M.E. Church. He was united in marriage to HARRIETT JONES, of Monmouth, Ill., on Feb. 28, l865. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, two of whom with the wife and mother, have preceded him to the Great Beyond. He was again united in marriage to MISS ALICE HUTCHINS of Woodland, Iowa, who with the children: MRS. MARY CURRY, of Seneca, S.D.; J.C., of Weldon, Iowa; S.J., of Garden Grove, Iowa; L.G., of Van Wert, Iowa; MRS. JENNIE FULLER, of Monmouth, Ill.; and MRS. INA CHASTAIN, of Leon, Iowa; and eleven grandchildren to whom he was devotedly attached, survive him. During his entire sickness he bore his afflictions bravely, always patient and uncomplaining.

Funeral services were held at Fairview M.E. Church on Tuesday, May 8th, conducted by the Rev. Ira M. Selby. Interment in the Leon Cemetery.
