GEORGE WASHINGTON SPICER was born in Pike County, Illinois, May 26, l853, and departed this life at his home in south Leon, January 28, l923; being at the time of his death, 70 years, 8 months and 3 days old. He was the second child of SANFORD and SARAH SPICER, having eleven brothers and sisters. In the year of l875, he was united in marriage to MISS MARTHA CURTIS. To this union were born nine children; MRS. WALTER DUNHAM, Leon, Iowa; ROLLIS SPICER, Leon, Iowa; JESSE SPICER, Shenandoah, Iowa; ROSS SPICER, of Atlantic, Iowa; HARRY SPICER, Leon, Iowa; MRS. LOU ROUTH, Collinsville, Oklahoma; ROY SPICER, Leon, Iowa; and MRS. GEORGE BAKER, Leon, Iowa; one boy, BERT SPICER, precedes his father.

The early part of his life was spent in Pike County, Illinois, where he devoted his time to farming and caring for his family. In l898, he moved with his family to Leon, Iowa, where he has since made his home.

GEORGE SPICER was a great lover of horses and after coming to Leon, spent the rest of his life racing horses, making the fairs and race meetings up until a short time before his death.

Besides his children he leaves to mourn his departure, a loving wife, two sisters and one brother, 26 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends. Before his death, he gave his life up to his Savior and told his people that he was ready to go home.

Although his going leaves us in sorrow, God knows what is best. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H.L. Olsmstead, Pastor of the Leon Christian Church. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
