Thursday, February l, l923A fatal accident occurred at the farm of ROBERT FEAR near Grand River last Thursday, resulting in the death of JOSEPH METZ, a young man, 24 years of age. MR. METZ and BOISE MCCONNELL were operating a power wood saw at the FEAR home, when the belt flew off striking METZ on the head, fracturing his skull and he passed away in a short time without regaining consciousness.
JOSEPH METZ, son of FRANCIS and ELIZA METZ, was born in Decatur County, November 30, l892, and departed this life, Jan. 25, l923, age 30 years, l month and 25 days. As a boy, he attended the country schools near his home, completing the eighth grade. He worked as a young man, first as a farm hand, later as a tenant, until the outbreak of the world war. May 22, l9l8, he went overseas with the 88th Division, l3lst Inf. He was in active service "over there," and returned to his country in June, l9l9. After his return, he resumed his life in the community as a farmer.
Those surviving him, beside his parents above named, are his sisters, MRS. ETHEL JONES; MRS. RACHEL MCCONNELL; MISS LOLA METZ; MISS SYLVIA METZ; MRS. VERA GLAZEBROOK. Beside these sisters, an aged grandmother, MRS. MARGARET METZ. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
