JOSHUA AVERY WEST, son of SAMUEL and MARY ANN WEST, was born in Knox County, Ill., near Maquoin, August 2, l847, and died at the home of his son, AMOS WEST, near Grand River, Iowa, Nov. l7, l922. At the time of his death he was 75 years, 3 months and l7 days old. He was united in marriage to LYDIA ELLEN CLAWSON, March l2, l873, and with his wife moved to Iowa in the year, l88l. Into their home came seven children; FRANK, SAMUEL, OSCAR, ASA, AMOS and EVERETT, his sons, and his one daughter, MRS. HULDAH ADAMS. FRANK died in infancy, SAMUEL some seven years ago. The others were with him at the time of his death and together with twenty-one grandchildren, three brothers, JOHN, DAN and PHIL, of Illinois, with a host of friends, survive to mourn his loss. Brother WEST's wife had preceded him into the great beyond, Jan. l2, l9l9, and since that time he had made his home with his son, AMOS.

February 20, l887, he united with the Mt. Zion Christian Church and was baptized May 2l, l888. He with his faithful wife, were regular attendants at church and Sunday School unless prevented by sickness. For several years he was a teacher in the Sunday School; his example in character was ever worthy of the emulation of others. A special mark of his character was his refusal to find fault with others, his jovial disposition which was in evidence continually with all that knew him. Brother WEST was one of those who leaves the world poorer when he forsakes it for the better country.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.E. Habliston, of the Grand River Methodist Church at the Mt. Zion Christian Church, Sunday, November l9th at ll:00 a.m.
Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
