Thursday, May 7, l925C.K. CHERRINGTON, son of JEPTHA and MARTHA CHERRINGTON was born July l6, l842, in Jackson County, Ohio, and died in Leon, Iowa, April l7, l925. His age at death was 82 years, seven months and one day. He was the last surviving member of a family of eight children.
MR. CHERRINGTON answered his country's call in the second year of the Civil War, enlisting in Co. K, 36th Ohio Infantry, under Captain Weldon, August 9, l862. He served throughout the remainder of the war, taking part in every battle in which his regiment engaged. He was wounded at the battle of Chicamauga, Ga. He was one of those who saw Sheridan arrive after his famous ride, in the retreating Union lines at Winchester. July 29, l865 he was married to MARY E. JOHNSON, to which union ten children were born, eight of whom survive: MRS. JESSIE MOORE, Lincoln, Neb.; MRS. JENNIE HANSEN, Douglas, Wyoming; MRS. TINCIE SHELTON, Decatur, Iowa; MRS. BERTHA BRUEGGEN, Council Grove, Kansas; MRS. JOHN PARRISH, Leon, Iowa; MRS. DELLA MCINTOSH, Leon, Iowa; MR. WILLARD CHERRINGTON, of Daykin, Nebraska.
Very shortly after the war, MR. CHERRINGTON moved to Iowa, coming to Decatur County where he has since made his home, spending the last thirty-five years of that time in Decatur. His wife died three years ago, May 2, l922, and since then he has made his home among his children.
In his early manhood, MR. CHERRINGTON united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ohio, on coming to Iowa, he transferred his membership and has held it in the Methodist Church of Decatur since residing there. In that community he was at the time of his death, the last surviving member of the G.A.R.
Funeral services were conducted at the Decatur Methodist Church, Sunday afternoon, April l9th, by J.E. Habliston, Pastor of Leon Methodist Church, and burial was made at the Decatur Cemetery, by the American Legion of Leon and Decatur.
