Thursday, May 4, l922JOHN W. CHEW, was born in the State of Indiana, October l, l839, and died at the home of his son, J. WESLEY CHEW in Leon, Iowa, April 30, l922, being 82 years and 7 months of age.
He moved with his parents to Iowa when about fifteen years of age and has lived in the same neighborhood in which they settled, practically all the rest of his life. He was married to MARY ANN RILEA(*can't read - paper torn) four sons, HADLEY, LEWIS, WESLEY and BERT survive their father. He also leaves two brothers, LEWIS, of Hopeville, WESLEY, of Ellston, and two sisters, FANNIE DIXON of Beaconsfield, and HANNAH RILEA, of Grand River, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren besides other relatives and a host of friends.
He was a member of the United Brethren Church and a consistent Christian man whose life was an influence for good and he was loved and respected by those who knew him. He was a soldier of the Civil War, being a member of the l6th Iowa Infantry, Company F., and was with Sherman on the march.
While he has been in failing health for the last few years, his last sickness was brief and he was not confined to his bed at all, his death being caused from heart trouble and he passed away without a struggle as the town clock was striking ten o'clock Sunday evening. A good man has gone from us, and the workd is better by him having lived in it.
The funeral services were held from the Methodist Church in Hopeville, conducted by the Rev. E.A. Place, of Leon, and the body was laid to rest in the Gregg Cemetery, southeast of Hopeville.
