ATWELL ALONZO JENKS, son of W.L.B. JENKS and LOUISA (MAC ARUN), was born at Beverly Court House, Randolf County, West Virginia, September 29, l83l, died at Leon, Iowa, May 29, l923, aged 9l years and 8 months. He was married to FRANCES S. COMBS, July 8, l864. To this union were born three children, JESSE A., LOUISIANA and FRANK W. Although southern born, at the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Navy, serving as staff officer under Commodores Greer, Foote and Dalghrene and Admiral David D. Porter, being promoted three times for bravery. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant. He is survived by his daughter, LOUISIANA, of Leon; FRANK W., of Arkansas City, Kansas; FRANK W., JR., of Los Angeles, California; also three half-brothers, THOS. C., and IRA B., of Illinois, and GEORGE, of San Diego, California. He was a true patriot, loving his country and its flag. He has answered the call of the Great Admiral and cast anchor in the (*can't read).

Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, the services at the request of the deceased, being private. The American Legion officiated as guard of honor. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
